Civilization comics and animated
shorts to commemorate the launch of the biggest Civ expansion pack
ever
Today, in honor of the launch of Sid
Meier’s Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, the biggest Civ expansion
pack ever, 2K Games and Firaxis have partnered with several celebrity web
comic creators popular in the gaming community to create and showcase
comics and animated shorts set within the Sid Meier’s Civilization
universe.
As the game that launched the “God
Game” strategy genre, Civilization has allowed players to direct great
armies in battles and bring warring factions together in dazzling feats of
diplomacy. Every player experiences the ultimate thrill of being in
command and leading a nation. Yet, we’ve always wondered what it would
be like to hear from the units and characters inside the game – to give
them a voice. What if life inside a game of Civilization was real –
real, at least, to the characters inside the game’s universe? What would
the units inside a game say to each other? What would they say about you
– the game’s “God” – and the decisions you make and strategies
you employ?
To celebrate the release of Civilization
IV: Beyond the Sword, 2K Games and Firaxis Games have challenged several
of the most beloved creators of “web comics” to give a voice to the
characters in Civ through a series of comics called Civilization
Daydreams. Starting on July 24 and ending August 10, 2007, these
Civilization-themed web comics from the artists behind 8-Bit Theater,
Control-Alt-Delete, Dueling Analogs, GUComics, MyExtraLife and PvPOnline,
as well as animated shorts from the executive producer and collaborators
behind the Over the Hedge comic and animated film, will debut on a
combination of the comic creator websites and Civ fansites including
www.apolyton.net, www.civfanatics.com and planetcivilization.gamespy.com.
The kick-off comic drawn by Woody Hearn of GUComics can be found at
www.civilization.com/daydreams, which will also be updated weekly with all
of the Civilization Daydreams comics and animated shorts.
And it doesn’t stop there! We know Civ
fans have great imaginations, so if you have your own Civilization
Daydream that you’d like to enter into the Civilization Daydreams Fan
Art and Comic Contest, check out the rules and entry form at
www.civilization.com/daydreams. Five winners will each win an Xbox 360®
Wireless game controller and Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty
Professional Series sound card while five runner-ups will receive an Xbox
360® Wireless Gaming Receiver. The winning submissions will then be
displayed at www.civilization.com/daydreams.
Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: Beyond
the Sword is available now, as is Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: Gold
Edition – featuring both Civ IV and Civ IV: Warlords plus an exclusive
fantasy poster by Greg Hildebrandt. To download the official Beyond the
Sword trailer, visit:
YUKE'S ANNOUNCES NEVES FOR THE
NINTENDO DS
Unique Puzzle Game Coming To The
Nintendo DS(TM)
CHICAGO, IL - July 25, 2007 - Yuke's
Company of America, subsidiary of Japanese game publisher Yuke's Company
Limited , today announced NEVES for the Nintendo DS(TM), a unique puzzle
game that challenges players to think critically as they align pieces and
build figures that correspond to a silhouette. Each puzzle features seven
wooden blocks, requiring the player to combine them to form specific
figures ranging from simple items like a sword or key to more complicated
ones such as birds or airplanes.
Targeted towards a more mature audience,
NEVES still appeals to anyone who enjoys challenging puzzles. And because
of the unique stylus controls of the Nintendo DS, controlling the puzzle
pieces in NEVES is a cinch; tilting, flipping, and moving the blocks is as
simple as dragging and tapping. But be careful, just because controlling
the pieces is easy doesn't mean the puzzles have to be. With over 500
different puzzles to choose from and four different modes including puzzle
mode, count mode, time mode, and versus mode, players will have countless
hours of fun solving puzzles of varying difficulty.
"We're greatly excited to bring
NEVES to the Nintendo DS," said Shane Takahashi, CEO of Yuke's
Company of America. "The game's modern aesthetic and design should
appeal to more discerning gamers while its portability and approachable
gameplay should interest almost anyone."

stimulating entertainment, providing a challenging experience for players
of all ages," said Jim Ireton, Vice President of Sales and Marketing

UBISOFT AND 20TH CENTURY FOX TEAM
UP FOR VIDEO GAME BASED ON JAMES CAMERON'S "AVATAR"
SAN FRANCISCO – July 24, 2007 –
Today, Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers,
announced that it will develop and publish the video game based on
Twentieth Century Fox's "Avatar,” the upcoming feature film written
and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Cameron, whose
previous films include "Titanic,” "True Lies,” "The
Abyss,” "Aliens,” "The Terminator” and "Terminator 2:
Judgment Day.”
"Avatar” is the story of an
ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet
filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien
body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for
his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in
the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since
helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time and winner
of eleven Oscars® including Best Picture. The "Avatar” cast
includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. Academy
Award-winning visual effects house, WETA Digital, renowned for its work in
"The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy and "King Kong,” will
incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments
and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the
audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and
characters.
"Ubisoft is excited to partner with
20th Century Fox and James Cameron on this important project. 'Avatar's'
rich scenario, onscreen action and special effects will provide a wealth
of inspiration to create a unique interactive experience," said Yves
Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft. "True to their
reputation, Ubisoft's creative teams are looking forward to recreating
Cameron's high definition 3D environment in a compelling game for film and
game fans."
James Cameron commented: "For the
movie 'Avatar' we are creating a world rich in character, detail, conflict
and cultural depth. It has the raw material for a game that the more
demanding gamers of today will want to get their hands on -- one that is
rich in visuals and ideas, and challenging in play. I told the Ubisoft
team I wanted them to be free to do their very best work, and not think of
this as a movie-based game. They responded with a fully realized
presentation which captured the soul of the world and the characters,
while promising to be a knockout game on its own terms. Their passion
inspired my confidence that they are going to do something
transcendental."
Elie Dekel, Executive Vice President of
Fox Licensing and Merchandising added: "James Cameron's "Avatar”
will re-define the movie-going experience forever. Cameron's vision and
innovative approach to film-making demand that we align this breakthrough
project with the most talented and creative partners in the world. As we
embark on the incredible journey that is "Avatar,” we are thrilled
to be collaborating with Ubisoft on the development of the video game.
After an extensive review, it became clear the talented Ubisoft team is
uniquely able to bring Cameron's vision into the interactive realm."
The game is expected to release in
conjunction with the movie's planned opening in May 2009.
