Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Announces Ground-Breaking, Next-Generation 3D Online-User Community for PLAYSTATION(R)3 - 'Home'

Free Download to Allow Broad User Interaction in Highly Detailed Community Environment; Opens Door to User-Created Content, Collaboration and Commerce

TOKYO and SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced the unveiling of a first-of-its-kind 3D online user community service for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. The service, known as "Home," will enable users to create their own avatar and explore a real-time virtual community, as if they are playing a detailed 3D game for PS3.

The service will become available globally beginning in fall 2007. Home will be demonstrated at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California on March 7 as a key element of SCEI Worldwide Studios' President Phil Harrison's keynote presentation titled "Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames." Home is a real-time online 3D, networked community available on the PLAYSTATION(R)Network. It allows PS3 users to interact, communicate, join online games, shop, share private content and even build and show off their own personal spaces to others in real time. Home will be available as a free download from the PLAYSTATION(R)Store and will launch directly from XMB(TM) (XrossMediaBar) on PS3.

With an avatar uniquely customized according to each user's preference, users can explore the 3D community that is Home -- a sleek, modern environment featuring spacious common areas; custom spaces dedicated to specific games; and personal apartments. Each user is assigned an apartment in Home where they can invite others to join them as they show off their own style in an area they can personalize themselves with furniture, art and other items -- even a different view from their windows.

They can also show their personal video, pictures and other digital media content found on their PS3 hard drives in their apartments. Very rich interactive communication with others is achieved through built in text, audio and video chat, along with sophisticated emotional animations for each character. Sharing continues in the "Hall of Fame," where users can display new 3D trophies that will be unlocked through in-game milestones for the games they own as well viewing the trophies of other users across the PLAYSTATION Network and for other games they've yet to purchase. "This is a significant step forward in the area of user community services and emergent entertainment experiences," said Izumi Kawanishi, Corporate Executive and CTO Software, SCEI.

"While the 3D graphics demonstrate the power of PS3 and the PLAYSTATION Network, the most impressive feature in Home is the variety of ways in which multiple consumers, as well as our third-party partners, can experience the next generation of communication by interacting and sharing among each other. I feel strongly that this unique blend of community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce will expand the future of computer entertainment." Home will go into a closed beta test this spring with a full launch targeted for later this year. By having a broad range of business partners participate in Home -- from 3rd party publishers and developers to brands outside traditional gaming categories -- along with a powerful selection of upcoming game software titles for PS3, SCEI will continue to expand the horizons of networked entertainment and vigorously promote PS3 as the next generation computer entertainment platform.

Sony Computer Entertainment Unveils Two Innovative User Community Titles - 'Home' and 'LittleBigPlanet(TM)' - Supporting Its Game 3.0 Vision Announced at GDC 2007

New Developer Tools and Technologies Also Introduced for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM))

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) unveiled two unique PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) titles: "Home," a real-time, networked 3D avatar- based community that serves as a meeting place for PS3 users from around the world, and "LittleBigPlanet(TM)," a community-based game where users play, create and share what they build with other worldwide PS3 users.

These new networked titles are part of the "Game 3.0" vision introduced during a keynote by Phil Harrison, President, Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). The power of consumer creativity via Game 3.0 leverages trends such as online collaboration and user-generated content with the goal of creating an engaging new experience in interactive entertainment and new streams for creative game development. In contrast to the current game development and publishing paradigm, Game 3.0 reverses the trend of "pushing" content dictated solely by the developer, and puts the spotlight back on the consumer, encouraging them to become part of the game creation process. What is different is how this can be applied to an even broader degree creating new business models that expand the audiences and scope of interactive entertainment.

"Technology innovation is part of the culture at SCE as evidenced by our influence on real-time 3D computer graphics and the optical disc format in the 1990's, to the more recent innovations such as Cell Broadband Engine(TM) computing and the use of Blu-ray in PS3," said Phil Harrison, president, Worldwide Studios, SCE. "Our vision for the future, Game 3.0, will continue our track record of industry advancement by leveraging the convergence of technologies, from broadband and video chat to supercomputer-speed processors, to make gaming more interactive and dynamic than ever before." Demonstrating this vision of Game 3.0, SCE today unveiled a new real-time 3D avatar-based community and communication service for the PS3 platform. The new service, Home, puts users into a real-time, networked 3D community, where they can interact, join online games, communicate, share content and even build and show off their own personal spaces. Home will be available this fall as a free download from the PLAYSTATION(R)Store. Other notable features include:

-- Making your own personalized 3D character or avatar. These realistic human characters are highly customizable with different body types, skin tones, ages, clothing and accessories, creating a unique personality for each user.

-- Exploring the 3D community that is Home

-- a sleek, modern indoor space featuring spacious common areas, retail shops, game lobbies and extensible, customizable personal apartments.

-- Communicating with others through text, audio and video chat, along with sophisticated emotional animations for each character.

-- Being assigned an apartment in Home where others can be invited to join you as you show off your own style in an area you can personalize yourself with furniture, art and other items. You can even show your video, pictures and music content stored on your PS3 hard drive.

-- "Hall of Fame," where you can display new 3D trophies that will be unlocked through in-game milestones in PS3 games.

Another innovative example of the Game 3.0 vision is a brand-new community-based world called LittleBigPlanet. LittleBigPlanet starts with players learning about the powers of their chosen characters to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, items to collect and puzzles to solve -- requiring community-based teamwork and brainpower. As players begin to explore, their creative skills grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings -- the first step to sharing them with the whole world. Ultimately, levels of the game will be user generated on a worldwide scale and will change everyday as players create, publish and share their own levels. Users have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to play. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it's ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet universe to come and explore their "patch," or they can go and explore everybody else's. Other notable features and characteristics of the community-based game include:

-- Players craft their own individual experience. There's not just one way to play.

-- Unlimited possibilities for user-created content

-- players can customize everything: their characters, the landscape around them and their own "patch" on LittleBigPlanet.

-- Players discover and win new skills and items to aid them on their creative journey.

-- Online and offline multiplayer modes -- work as a team or get competitive.

A fully-featured sample version of LittleBigPlanet is expected on the PLAYSTATION Network this fall, with a full version expected to be made available in early 2008.

Simplifying Development for PS3 SCE also introduced advanced graphics tools and technologies for PS3, including PLAYSTATION(R)Edge -- a new set of cutting edge technologies that will be released to PS3 developers via the existing developer support network. Exploiting the technology of its highest performing games, SCE has chosen to create specialized systems that demonstrate best practices in making use of the Synergistic Processing Unit (SPU) in the Cell Broadband Engine, and utilization of the RSX(TM), a graphics chip co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCE for PS3. With industry-defining features, a tool for RSX performance analysis, GCMReplay, is used extensively in the tuning of first-party titles and was also unveiled.

LittleBigPlanet(TM): Explore, Create, Share.

Be Part of a Global PlayStation(R)3 Community Creating a Brand New Gaming World; Genre-Defying, Astoundingly Imaginative - It's More Than Just Gaming

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios today revealed a glimpse of the LittleBigPlanet(TM) -- the first creative gaming experience for PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) -- at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California. Developed by Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet is a new PS3 community-based game with a hugely innovative concept behind it. Players meet on a blue and green planet scattered with individual plots -- and use their character's amazing abilities to play, create and share what they build with other gamers throughout the world via PLAYSTATION(R)Network.

The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character's powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve -- requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings -- the first step to sharing them with the whole community. Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched- together 3D landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to view and play.

There's no complicated level editor; all of these skills can be learned by simply playing the game. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it's ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch -- or can go and explore everybody else's. "We were confident that PS3 would be the platform to lead the way in creative gaming, and LittleBigPlanet brings this concept to life spectacularly," said Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. "By giving players the power to shape and share an entire virtual world via PLAYSTATION Network, we've created the space for PS3 owners to realize their creativity and craft their own unique gameplay experience." So, how does it work?

-- Play the game, learn the skills and then find your own way to play. There isn't a set solution to anything -- you live LittleBigPlanet however you want to. -- Create your own content -- customize your character and build your own locations. You have the power to rearrange anything in this unbelievably tactile landscape. -- Build, move, create, collaborate -- then share content with friends or publicly by inviting the whole world to come and visit your own location on LittleBigPlanet.

Key features:

-- There's not just one way to play. Players craft their own individual experience -- Unlimited possibilities for user-created content

-- players can customize everything: their characters, the landscape around them and their own patch on LittleBigPlanet

-- Players discover and win new skills and items to aid them on their creative journey -- Initial levels will be provided

-- endless others will be user-generated on a global scale. LittleBigPlanet will change every day as players contribute their own levels

-- Online and offline multiplayer modes

-- play alone, work as a team or get competitive

-- LittleBigPlanet global community for players to get involved with: includes player comments, rankings and easy communication with new and existing friends

A demo of LittleBigPlanet for PS3 is slated for the PLAYSTATION Network this fall. The full version will follow in early 2008.

Shrapnel Games Wants You To Eat Electric Death! New Digital Eel Game Announced, Beta Testers Sought!

Hampstead, NC, 07 March 2007 - Strap an astronaut diaper on, put Bonzo to bed, and say a prayer 'cos thanks to Digital Eel and Shrapnel Games you're going to:

EAT ELECTRIC DEATH!!!!

Eat Electric Death? What in the name Randolph Carter is that? Could it be:

(a) A retro punk band from New York City? (b) What happens when a cat chews through the Christmas tree lights? (c) The words of an overachieving state executioner? (d) A shiny new boardgame of tactical space combat set in the Weird Worlds universe?

While it could easily be "b" it's pretty doubtful we'd send out a press release about dead cats, so it must be "d"!

Shrapnel Games is excited to announce that Digital Eel, developers of the award-winning and critically acclaimed Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space (available for both Windows and Mac) are taking gamers on a bold new adventure. Just as they distilled the essence of becoming the Kirk and exploring the realms of space in under twenty minutes on your computer, Digital Eel is charting a new course in tactical space combat on your dining room table.

Eat Electric Death! is a fast and furious boardgame of tactical starship combat for two or more players (allowing for team play). Set in the Weird Worlds universe of computer fame, players will immediately recognize the wide variety of starships and races from the game. Twenty different vessels, from nimble Terran fighters to dreaded Urluquai capital ships are included. Of course it wouldn't be a Weird Worlds game without all types of cool weaponry so expect to see things like nova cannons, micrometorite guns, and the only weapon to be banned in seven galaxies and denounced by the Evil Empire Dedicated to Enslaving The 'Verse, the nefarious particle vortex cannon! (Better stock up on those astro-diapers!)

As you would expect from the masters of speedy and simple--but not simplistic-- gameplay Eat Electric Death! is easily learned and played by gamers of all ages. Forget four hundred page rulebooks and needing a master's degree in speculative starship physics, Digital Eel puts the fun back in space combat! Bookkeeping is a minimum, and involves keeping track of a few counters on your ship's data card. Combat is like shooting wamprats in Beggar's Canyon, with a single die resolution. There's plenty of chrome included with cloaking devices, point defense systems, teleportation, and more. Lots of ships, lots of weapons, and lots of tactical situations to explore. The scenarios are arranged to introduce players to new concepts as they progress, making the learning curve quite gentle.

Sounding pretty cool? Want to play it before anyone else? Right now Shrapnel Games is in need of playtesters as Eat Electric Death! goes into the beta stage. To become the first kid on your block to single-handedly defeat the all powerful Yellow Kawangi destroyer and win the adoration of fembots everywhere you'll need the ability to print out the playtest kit components and a couple of ten sided dice. Nerves of steel and a quick wit in the face of danger is optional.

To be considered for beta testing email Mindi at mindi@shrapnelgames.com with the subject line "Eat Electric Death Beta Testing". Tell Mindi about your experiences with boardgaming, space games, and any previous playtesting. Those chosen will be notified. Actual beta testing will involve playing the game and actively providing feedback to the developers so be prepared to speak up!

Stay tuned for more information on this upcoming exciting boardgame in the coming months, and to check out the computer game that Eat Electric Death! is based upon, please visit www.shrapnelgames.com/digital_eel/weird_worlds/1.htm You'll find a fully playable mini-mission demo, and once you've fallen in love with the game you can order it for only $24.95, either as a CD or as an immediate download.

To see the complete Shrapnel Games catalog featuring games of independent excellence that you won't find on your local retail shelf go to www.shrapnelgames.com. MotorStorm(TM) Delivers the Ultimate Brutal Off-Road Racing Experience for PLAYSTATION(R)3 System

Highly Anticipated Racer Harnesses the Power of the PS3(TM) to Bring Stunning High Definition Graphics and Lightning-Fast Gameplay Along With All-New Online Racing Functionality

SAN DIEGO, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today the North American release of MotorStorm(TM), available exclusively for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. Developed by Evolution Studios, the acclaimed development team renowned for their World Rally Championship (WRC) game series, MotorStorm introduces players to an alternative and extreme off-road racing festival where the only rule is to take out the competition and win at all costs. Recently launched in Japan, MotorStorm has incorporated numerous graphical and gameplay enhancements for the North American version, including the addition of a 12-player online mode. The game also features innovations such as real-time track deformation, where ruts in the track will remain and cause each lap to be different, an aggressive artificial intelligence (A.I.) system that scales to the player's abilities, and spectacular crash sequences that take full advantage of the PS3 hardware, making MotorStorm one of the most anticipated next-generation games available.

"MotorStorm showcases the power and technology of the PS3 with its combination of next-generation online and offline gameplay functionality and life-like A.I.," said Jeff Reese, Director, Software Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "With over-the-top action, cinematic crashes, and exhilarating gameplay, consumer anticipation for the game has been overwhelming. Not only do we expect thrill seekers to enhance their PS3 library with MotorStorm, we believe the game will ultimately draw more consumers to the PS3." In MotorStorm, players descend upon the badlands of Monument Valley for the MotorStorm Festival to celebrate an alternative racing culture. The festival is highlighted by a no-holds-barred off-road race with aggressive and competitive opponents all gunning for the championship title. Players will cut through mud paths, speed over sand dunes, and launch across rocky cliffs in an extreme race to the finish line, all of which is underscored by a rocking soundtrack. The competition is fierce and it's a survival of the fittest with MotorStorm's combat-like racing. The physics-based car damage feature heightens the challenge, allowing for any of the seven vehicle types to break and destroy parts upon collisions with other racers. \

A real-time track deformation function has been implemented so that after each lap raced the terrain will look and handle differently, ensuring players will never face the same lap twice. Harnessing the power of the PS3, MotorStorm features remarkable player-centric A.I. that reacts to numerous situations within the game, such as realistically reacting to player taunts, seeking out the best routes based on vehicle type used, and changing the level of driving aggression due to player actions. The advanced cinematic effects such as motion-blur and slow motion Hollywood style "crash cams" make wiping out in your vehicle nearly more exciting than finishing the lap. Featuring a compilation of tracks from some of the most popular rock bands, the MotorStorm in-game soundtrack accentuates the game's brutal off-road mayhem, providing players the ideal background music to get in the mood for complete destruction and cutthroat competition. The soundtrack features heart-pounding rock anthems sure to raise the game's intensity level by artists such as Primal Scream, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Slipknot, and more. MotorStorm gained critical acclaim at the 2006 E3 show, earning IGN's 2006 E3 award for "Best Racing Game" and GameSpot's Editor's Choice Award for "Best Racing Game." The game also earned 1UP's "Best of Show" award from TGS 2006. The independent Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates MotorStorm "T" for "Teen" (Descriptors: Language, Violence). SAN FRANCISCO — March 4, 2007 — At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007, Microsoft Corp. today announced plans to launch a 512MB Memory Unit for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system and an increase in the official size limit of Xbox LIVE® Arcade games from 50 MB to 150 MB.

Beginning today, the Xbox LIVE Arcade game size limit has increased from 50 MB to 150 MB, giving developers greater flexibility in game design and expanding the opportunity to add advanced game features while still keeping games compact.

“The new size limit offers developers increased flexibility and continued opportunities for innovative game development, while also ensuring that the millions of gamers on Xbox LIVE can continue to easily access, download and play all Xbox LIVE Arcade games on Xbox 360,” said Chris Early, product unit manager for Xbox LIVE Arcade and Microsoft Casual Games at Microsoft. “If you take a look at current games like ‘Roboblitz’ and ‘Small Arms,’ it’s clear that our developers deliver amazing game experiences within a compact size limit. Our focus is on continuing to provide developers with an environment that allows for the creation of cost-efficient games and that nurtures an artistic and creative approach to game development.”

“As we prepare to launch our first Xbox LIVE Arcade game, ‘Boom Boom Rocket,’ we’re able to see how dynamic and creative this platform is,” said Chip Lange, vice president of Online Commerce for Electronic Arts Inc. (EA). “Having ‘Wing Commander Arena’ on Xbox LIVE Arcade allows us to take full advantage of the online play and bring to life a 16-player online arcade experience that delivers unparalleled arcade action.”

This week at GDC, Microsoft will showcase forthcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade games from a cross-section of genres to the game development community:

NCsoft's Auto Assault reloads with explosive content expansion

New auction house, vehicles and system upgrades featured in the games' fourth free update

AUSTIN, Texas, March 5, 2007 - NCsoft® today announced the release of the fourth free content expansion of Auto Assault® which includes the installation of an auction house, the introduction of new vehicle chassis and a new tournament schedule as well as several quality of life system improvements. The auction house is one of the most important additions to Auto Assault since its release, adding depth to the game while making it easier to profit from the game's voluminous loot drops.

The auction house, for example, will enable lower level players to obtain currency by selling material to higher level players who can then craft more powerful weapons. Additionally, an email system will allow players, who are in the same faction, to send messages regarding items up for auction as well as sending items via email. "Auto Assault is about collecting massive amounts of loot, and this auction house and mail delivery system will make it easier to profit from collecting loot," said Andrew Wagner, NCsoft's producer for Auto Assault. "The auction house and mail system will add a much needed additional layer of interactivity and item accessibility for all players and allow players to progress faster and build bigger, nastier vehicles."

The additional profits made from the auction house will help Auto Assault players to attain another feature from the update, two powerful, new epic vehicle chassis. The new chassis, available at the INC vehicle stores include the Switter, a medium-sized chassis available for all classes and the Backup, a small chassis usable by any scout class. Rounding out the features are sweeping changes to the skills systems. Balance between races will be improved so success in player-versus-player combat will be based on skill rather than faction-based advantages. Additionally, skill building is now easier to manage and understand, allowing new players to create more powerful and useable skill sets. "Skills will now be more standardized, which will let players understand better the cost of each skill and how to better select the right skill for the right level," Wagner said. "This will bring more balance to the game while making skill sets more fun and powerful."

Also, responding to player feedback, tournaments have a new schedule and reward system built in. The new tournament schedule system is timed to work for players regardless of their time-zone location. The tournaments have been level-balanced so all players can enjoy arena carnage. With additional loot and bigger rewards, arena action will be more profitable for all participants. Auto Assault, developed by NetDevil®, LTD, is the first multiplayer online (MMO) game featuring vehicle combat, set in a post-apocalyptic world with fully destructible environments. Auto Assault is available at retailers in North America and Europe as well as at the NCsoft online store at www.plaync.com. The game includes the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. For more information on Auto Assault go to: www.autoassault.com.

Ankama Games unveils its next MMORPG: Wakfu!

05 March 2007 - In the continuity of the DOFUS phenomenon, Ankama Games presents the very first pictures and details of its next massively multiplayer video game on the website: www.wakfu.com.

Ankama Games became internationally renowned thanks to its main title DOFUS that now counts more than 3 million players worldwide. Within three years, this massively multiplayer video game won prize after prize in the United States and in France, and has been the inspiration for mangas (5 volumes) and artbooks (2 volumes). After such a success, Ankama Games starts a new project: Wakfu. This game will be sitting right next to DOFUS on the Tactical MMORPG line. The presentation website of this new game has been launched on Monday 26 February, 2007. New contents will regularly added to it, as the project progresses.

Wakfu is currently being produced. Ankama Games relies on its unique know-how to design and produce a quality title that will meet all the requirements of a vast community of players. Wakfu will be distributed in Europe, Northern America, and Asia as well as in other parts of the world requiring its translation (from French) in English, German, Spanish, Korean and Chinese.

The story of Wakfu takes place a long time after that of DOFUS. An ogre named Ogrest gathered all the six Dofus and gained boundless powers. The ogre offered his beloved the dragon eggs. But she turned down the present though worthy of the gods themselves, and Ogrest started shedding tears of rage and pique. The tears of the ogre made the ocean level increase so much that parts of the World are now submerged to the inhabitants' great displeasure. Now gods and heroes of the World are starting a new adventure before reaching Ogrest and confront him in an ultimate fight!

Bright graphics and a fantasy universe are also part of this project even though the Ankama Games team will be adding many innovations to the tactical gameplay it's famous for! The very first trailer of Wakfu, half way between cartoon animation and game demo, can be viewed on the official website. It gives an idea of the interactive environment in which players will evolve. In Wakfu, the player will discover a vast world inhabited by all sorts of surprising creatures. Game servers will be able to host up to 25,000 players simultaneously.

The first closed beta-tests of Wakfu will start sometime during 2007. The recruiting campaign for the beta-testers will be launched within the next days.
